The Noise Of A Vacuum Cleaner Could Make You Money
Is that the weirdest blog post heading you ever saw or what?
You may be forgiven for thinking that I’ve had a few too many ales tonight and this is just the ramblings of a drunken fool but stick with me as this promises to get interesting, if a little weird.
Okay, let me start with a slightly strange confession, ever since I can remember I’ve found that the sound of a vacuum cleaner really relaxes me, in fact it relaxes me to the point of making me want to fall asleep. In fact, it’s not just vacuum cleaners but hair dryers too and my all time favourite…the industrial road sweeper which is one of the biggest vacuum cleaners you can get…I never like to do things by halves
Now hold on, I can see you all now backing away from me and smiling nervously whilst simultaneously reaching for a straight jacket but wait, there is a reasoning behind this.
I have actually looked into this and it’s more common than you might think….no, it is HONESTLY!!
In fact, the English football player Wayne Rooney talks about this ‘quirk’ in his autobiography ‘My Story’ and you can read an article about this at the end of this post.
Now the science bit, apparently, the sound a vacuum cleaner emits is white noise which is very similar to the noise inside a mothers womb and tests have shown that babies find this noise very comforting…..in fact, not just babies but adults too.
It’s the same reason why some people like the sound of rain or a waterfall or any sort of rhythmic repeated noise, it’s very relaxing.
Ok, so I’ve managed to convince you that I’m not actually a candidate for the funny farm but what the heck has this got to do with making money?
Well, as you know, I’m into niche marketing, which is basically selling products in specialised markets and would you believe that there is actually a market for people who want to buy vacuum cleaner CD’s?
Yes it’s true.
Check out this link HERE
Also, check out the Amazon marketplace by typing in ‘white noise CD’s’ and you”ll get lots of results back with people selling everything from vacuum cleaner noise to hair dryer noise, specifically aimed at mothers trying to get their babies off to sleep.
So, can all the marketers among you see the potential yet?
How easy would it be to record a CD of vacuum cleaner noise, package it up into a CD and sell it?
I mean, I would do this myself….if I could stay awake long enough

I can attest to this. As a kid I would drift off to sleep to comforting hum of the attic fan in the hallway outside my bedroom…Hmmm, where’s my recorder?

I work on Saturdays when the IT Dept in the casino is very quiet. I made arrangements with one of the housekeepers to stop by every Saturday to vacuum. And with your post, Eddy, I’ll be upfront and say it is one of the highlights of my week. For the vacuuming that is, not the housekeeper – although she’s a pleasant soul.
Thank you for your explanation, Eddy. You’ve confirmed my fondness for vacuum “noise” has a sound basis.

I can see there was no white noise around you early this morning! Still up at 3.00 a.m.! I, on the other hand, didn’t need any as I had half a glass of wine with dinner and promptly slept for nearly 11 hours! And now I am going to join your Guru Buddy System!

Hi Edward,
I am sucker for your blog posts. Sorry about the bad vacuum joke! Great Post, just shows you can find profitable niche markets in the most unlikely areas.
Keep up the good work.

This is one of the best post I’ve ever read. Although I don’t find the noise of a vacuum cleaner relaxing because, I clean houses and the sound reminds me of work. However I do sleep with a small fan by my bed to help block out noise.
Thanks for the post!

Hi Ginger.
Hey what a coincidence, so do I
I guess because having a vacuum cleaner going all night is a little impractical

Hi Diana
Yes, I often like to work well into the wee small hours…another little quirk of mine

Hi Patrick
This reminds me of when I used to work for a local newspaper and the office cleaning staff used to vacuum around our desks.
It was all I could do to stay awake, very relaxing
By the way, did you know you can listen to different vacuum noises on youtube?

Hi Mike
Just goes to show that anything a little off the wall that interests us there are also others bound to be interested in it too.
Now, thanks to the power of the internet we can find like minded people.

Interesting material. Better not pitch my thoughts here seeing that I am pretty opinionated. It really is important to possess ideas though.

when using hair dryers, it would be better to use those low wattage types because they are not very damaging to the hair ~~,

Well well well, when I had my first ever tape recorder in 1974, the vac was the first thing I recorded, I just couldn’t wait to have it on tap. I became aware of the Electrolux recording for babies in the early 90′s when I applied to Central TV’s First Cut series to make a short film about my passion, up until that point I thought I was alone!
I have many recordings, some manipulated in wave lab and even one particlarly fierce emulation done on a guitar with various tracks for the different partials. I have drifted off to this kind of thing nearly every day for over 30 years and am currently enjoying my latest CD ‘The White Goods Album’ It features vacuums, lawn mowers, spinners, tumble dryers, hair dryers and yes I even chased the gutter sweeper down the road with a mini disc recorder. The womb noise comparison make total sense to me. As a small child, whenever my mom ran the vac round I would leap onto the setee, curl up into a phoetal position and cover my face for warm air and darkness which was integral to the pleasure. If you listen quietly on headphones, sometimes the most beautiful music can be heard. Last time I bought a Vacuum Cleaner, the assistant was astonished when I asked to hear it in action! I’m not paying all that money for a high pitched irritating whistle I said!
This white noise theory also explains why so many people doze off at the wheel while driving at night, car sound also induces somnambulance. Deep Joy.

Its like you read my mind! You appear to know a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with a few pics to drive the message home a little bit, but instead of that, this is excellent blog. A great read. I’ll certainly be back.
