Let me ask you a question…do you fall into any of these categories?
* Hopeless dreamers
* Gullible fools
* Greenhorn newbies
* Realistic go-getters
I’d like to talk about each category in turn, but first let me explain what has prompted this post.
As you know if you’ve been following this blog for any length of time, one of my income streams involves Virtual Assistant work manning the support desks for various clients.
Now I really enjoy this work and working from home doing this kind of service has been one of my all time dreams…I absolutely love the freedom of being able to work when, where and how I want but some elements of this job do get me down from time to time.
Let me explain…
Obviously being in this business you do get to know people and I get a lot of feedback from them on their various online adventures. They tell me about their hopes and dreams, what they’d like to achieve online and also, sadly, I get to hear about how they’ve been burned in the past.
Now please don’t get me wrong, my heart goes out to anyone who has fallen foul of a scam or wasted money on hopeless money making systems that are never going to work, but there is a lesson to be learned here.
SCAMMERS AND CRAP PRODUCT SUPPLIERS CAN ONLY THRIVE IF WE FEED THEM!!
So people it’s time to start wising up and being more careful about what you purchase online. But not only that, it’s time to grow up as well and stop buying into these ridiculous income claims and promises of push button systems – IT’S A BUNCH OF CRAP!!
Don’t get me wrong, not all systems for sale online are rubbish, there are some excellent ones out there, I’ve purchased quite a few which have helped me get to where I am today earning a comfortable living working from home.
It can be hard to distinguish the good ones from the bad ones because unfortunately the sales pages share some common elements which may make them seem all the same – but they are not.
It’s not a simple matter of black and white and even the legitimate marketers use the same sales tactics as the dodgy ones, that just goes with the territory I’m afraid and is the nature of sales and advertising all over the marketplace, not just online.
I mean think of the last time you saw an advert on the TV for something like a new car for example. The advertisers have to make the ad look sexy in order to sell the damn thing so what we get is pictures of open roads, happy families, beautiful men and women, thrilling action sequences etc. etc. you know the drill.
The reality about driving of course is the endless traffic jams, fuel costs, road tax etc. etc. y’know, all the real life nitty gritty stuff that comes with car ownership. Now obviously they can’t put that in the advert or it wouldn’t sell and it’s a similar thing when selling online products, you have to focus on the positive aspects of the business or system to sell it.
Nothing wrong with that, but for gods sake people please stop falling for these outrageous claims that sound too good to be true because the truth is that yes, many good IM systems can show you how to make a good income online but THE SYSTEM ITSELF WON’T DO IT FOR YOU, YOU ALSO HAVE TO PUT SOME EFFORT IN.
Now as I’ve said, it can be difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff and it does take a certain amount of time and experience before you learn what’s good and what’s not good.
If you need some help then I highly recommend you download a Free copy of my guide Newbies Beware as this will help you make more informed decisions when buying online.
Okay, now I’ve got that little rant off my chest I want to get another little rant off my chest…sorry!
Back to those categories of people I mentioned earlier…
* Gullible fools
* Hopeless dreamers
* Greenhorn newbies
* Realistic go-getter’s
GULLIBLE FOOLS – This type of person believes everything they see, hear and read without question and does not employ any critical faculties whatsoever. They are a scammers dream and make the same stupid mistakes over and over again without learning.
HOPELESS DREAMERS – Maybe have tried a couple of things online and know that it is possible to make an income but haven’t got the staying power to make it happen. Typically they will move from offer to offer in the hope that ‘this is the one that will work’ which it never does of course because they go into things with the wrong mindset.
GREENHORN NEWBIES – These are the ones I feel most sorry for because they are fair game. They know little or nothing about how making money online works and so are looking for someone to trust. Like the hopeless dreamers they know that it’s possible and that it can work but need lots of guidance and sadly will probably be burned a few times before they start to wise up.
REALISTIC GO GETTERS – These are the type of people I love. They’ve either been round the block a few times and wised up or they have good critical faculties in the first place and don’t just take things on face value. They ask pertinent and sensible questions and have a realistic approach to online business and also the ability to use their own initiative and think for themselves. They know about the scams and ‘too good to be true offers’ and are determined and willing to put the graft in to be successful.
Now obviously, those four character traits are again a little bit of a generalisation because you can’t really pigeon hole people that way – each of us are far more complex than that.
This is just an overview of what I see in the support desks I handle every day and also various forums I belong to so I think I’m quite well qualified to make these observations.
I want to end this post on a positive note by telling you about something that happened to me just after Christmas which I think sums up everything I have just talked about concerning the human condition relating to Internet Marketing and mindset.
When the seasons festivities finish in our house, my partner Amanda and I usually have an annual house clean out ready for the year ahead. I had been ordered..erm I mean I ‘offered’ to clean out the kitchen and when going through the cupboards I found this stuffed right at the back…
It’s a pizza tray that had somehow been thrown to the back of the cupboard probably after one of our parties last year and forgotten about.
As you can see from the picture, I made a start on cleaning it but it was bloody hard going. I tried all sorts of different abrasive scrubbers and creams but nothing would shift the baked on crud.
In the end I had to just keep scrubbing away with a steel scrubbing ball and chip it off bit by bit. Well by this time it was getting late at around 11pm, Amanda had retired to bed for the night (slacker – just kidding dearest ) and I was knackered after clearing cupboards out and cleaning all day so faced with this bloody pizza tray I just thought “Sod it, why am I bothering? I can just buy a new one”
And then it hit me…
This is the mentality that most people have when faced with a hard task that takes determination and effort. My lazy side kicked in to action…or should I say ‘inaction’, and I was just looking for the path of least resistance.
As soon as I realised this I got a little angry and decided that I was going to finish what I had started. After all, it’s a perfectly good pizza tray and just needs cleaning, why the hell should I just waste money on another one just because I can’t be arsed to clean this one.
So 2 hours and 10 sore fingers later I ended up with this…
Not too bad eh!
So that simple analogy of the pizza tray is exactly what is wrong with most people today – THEY DON’T FINISH WHAT THEY START!
And it’s not just rife in the Internet marketing world either, it’s all over the place. People who say they are going to stop smoking and never do, or start a fitness regime and don’t keep it up. People are moving in and out of relationships too quickly because they can’t be bothered to put the effort in to the one they have to make it work.
Whenever Amanda and I have a little …ahem…disagreement shall we say we work through it and I often say to her to lighten the mood “You’ll go out with me until you bloody well start to enjoy it lady”
Anyway, I don’t want to turn this into a marriage guidance post and I know that not all problems can be solved in the same way but the one thing people need to start doing more is trying harder and not giving up so easily.
Look at anyone who is successful today and I guarantee they had to work hard to get there..at least at first.
So come on people, it’s time to start wising up in 2011, get stuck in and make whatever you’re doing in IM work for you.
Now as I mentioned in a previous post, I’ve come across some really great products in the last couple of months that will work for you if you put the time and effort in and I will be detailing them with a video review for each one in my future posts…so stay tuned!
